Zürich Kolonial

Zurich, Switzerland

The association Zürich Kolonial emerged from the academic environment of historical studies in Zurich. The project focuses on a public and cooperative approach, during which it constantly reviews and develops its concepts. Its goal is to educate a broad public about Zurich's colonial history with an audio guide.

‍Although Switzerland itself did not formally have any colonies, it was nevertheless heavily involved in the colonial projects of other European nations. Zurichers became rich from overseas plantations, invested in slavery, organised ethnological shows and served as mercenaries in colonial armies, to name just a few examples. The effects of this continue to this day in the form of global wealth inequality and racial prejudice.

‍With the city walk, Zürich Kolonial wants to draw attention to these colonial entanglements and thereby campaign for a non-violent, just and tolerant society. To provide access also for people who cannot be on site, there is the possibility to listen to or read the texts online.

Using the example of Fribourg, three researchers from the University of Fribourg show how the Swiss had an impact in the colonial world and how colonial entanglements have changed and continue to change local histories. Glossary, blogs and dialogue on an interactive platform - do you notice colonial traces in your surroundings? Colonialism still shapes our lives today!

The Department of Contemporary History at the University of Fribourg, together with the Institute for Education in Social Sciences at the University of Teacher Education Lucerne, offers the Master's programme "History Education and Public History".

Deutschschweizerische Gesellschaft für Geschichtsdidaktik

Prof. Dr. Christian Mathis
Präsident
christian.mathis@phzh.ch

https://www.dggd.ch/

The Deutschschweizerische Gesellschaft für Geschichtsdidaktik (DGGD) promotes research, development and teaching in the field of history education. History education is the science of communication and learning, presentation and representation or the teaching and learning of history in formal, non-formal and informal (educational) contexts. History education understood in this way has numerous overlaps with public history and makes an important contribution to political maturity in democratically organised societies.

The DGGD therefore takes a position on educational policy issues and developments in the field of historical learning in schools and society. In particular, it is the point of contact for questions relating to the teaching of history in the Swiss education system.

Historisches Seminar, Universität Luzern

Lucerne, Switzerland

Short distances to lecturers, proximity to research, individual scope for creativity: studying history in Lucerne offers manageable structures and innovative topics, from the medieval image machine to the history of photography, the history of marginalised groups and global networking in the modern age. We don't just make history, we have history: The Department of History at the University of Lucerne is older than the University of Lucerne. It was founded in 1989 at the then already existing Lucerne School of Theology. At the youngest university in Switzerland, we are therefore one of the oldest in today's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

In addition to the founding professorship specialising in modern times, a second professorship specialising in the Middle Ages and Renaissance was added in 2004. Various SNSF professorships and titular professorships have complemented and temporarily supplemented the team. Since 2018, there has also been a professorship for Global History and, since 2021, another professorship specialising in Modern Times. The teaching and research programme is shaped by a large number of externally funded projects and established lecturers. In teaching, we cooperate with the in-house Seminar for Cultural Studies and Science Studies and the Institut d'Histoire at the University of Neuchâtel, among others.

Starting in Janary 2025, we will offer the Joint Degree Master programme in History Education and Public History together with the University of Teacher Education Lucerne.

Hochschule Luzern – Design Film Kunst

Lucerne, Switzerland

The Master's degree programme in Art at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is an applied art degree programme. It follows the principle of informed practice and is a programme with a special interest in public-relevant topics and with regard to artistic, aesthetic, pedagogical, media, political and social issues. With the Art in Public Spheres major, artists qualify for artistic-interventionist and artistically mediating fields of work - whether as freelance artists and curators, with projects in public spaces or with specific communities, or in co-operation with various institutions or companies. In addition to developing a profile in artistic practice, students also acquire knowledge of current mediation formats, different working contexts and international fields of discourse.

As a partner of the Master programme History Education and Public History (University of Teacher Education Lucerne and University of Lucerne), we reflect on how we can convey historical knowledge in an artistic and interventionist way in public spaces.

It therefore co-operates with museums and memorials as well as other institutions involved in the communication of history. Together with the Freie Universität Berlin, it has been running the Master's degree programme in Public History since 2008. This recognises the high level of media interest in history as well as the growing social importance of historical places of learning in research and teaching.
